Hue (VNA) – The in the central province of
conducted 21
organ transplants in August, the highest number ever in a month, according to Director Prof. Ph.D Pham
Nhu Hiep.
The 21 surgeries included a liver, two heart and
18 kidney transplants, he said.
He
particularly mentioned the same-day organ transplants performed by the hospital
on August 31, saying the organs from a brain-dead donor in Hanoi were
transported to the province by air and transplanted into a 36-year-old
patient of heart disease and a 52-year-old liver cancer patient.
The
transplanted heart started beating on its own over four hours after removed
from the donor’s body while the liver began fully functioning seven hours after
the removal, the doctor added. The two recipients are in good condition.
So far, the
hospital has performed over 800 with many organs transported
to the recipients by air.
Founded in
1894, the Hue Central Hospital is among Vietnam’s leading medical centres. It is
the first in the country to be named on the world’s heart-transplant list. It successfully carried out the first heart transplant in 2011.
On 9, the hospital established a centre for tissue and organ
transplatation and launched a campaign calling for tissue and organ donation.
On the day of launch, over 100 people registered to become donors. –VNA
